The human brain seems designed to find patterns in the universe. To tell a story with a beginning, middle and end. There’s a reason that being able to foresee the ‘next big thing’ is considered a laudable trait. For every advancement there is a least one person that sees the potential and starts. Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Elon Musk, etc. They looked at the fabric of uncertainty around them and found a pattern. There’s a large number of people who looked at the patterns and thought something else would be big. All the failed dot.coms, businesses and restaurants confirm this.
This is not a post about iconoclasts nor do I have any claim to foresight. I’ve simply been trying to ‘unlearn’ the ‘ability’ to anticipate what’s next. I may have a good idea but I have no real way of knowing. Unfortunately, experience teaches us the wrong thing. We remember the events and the equation that led to the outcome and assume that the universe will allows follow that formula when it occurs. Other than some immutable laws of physics, the universe is not compelled to provide the same outcome given the same input from us. Especially since we don’t see the whole milieu.
A change of a centimeter, a nanosecond, a light-year can make or break an event. I’m trying to unlearn the ‘correct’ response and simply just be and act in the moment. Not anticipate. Not crumple under the uncertainty. Simply be present for the wonders the universe reveals to me.
